Walmart, after parting ways with Bharti, has been aggressive with its
wholesale business in India through omni-channel strategy. Now, the
American retail giant is eyeing the high margin fashion category, which is
driving the ecommerce market in India. The company is said to be
contemplating bringing its 'George' clothing brand and home products
through third-party online platforms.
The company has decided to pursue a different ecommerce route to take on rivals like Amazon, which is giving tough competition to home-grown ecommerce players like Flipkart and Snapdeal. Walmart aims to utilise its large store network as its distribution points through a free shipping club program. However, experts say that it would have to invest more in the country to fulfill the ecommerce plans.
Walmart India aims to open 50 stores in the country over the next five years. The plan is to open brick-and-mortar stores while establishing online presence. Apart from Andhra and Telangana, where it would open cash-n-carry stores, the company is eyeing to expand footprint in Delhi, Uttar Pradesh, Punjab, Haryana and Rajasthan.
