Co-optex has, for the first time, unveiled a range of organic cotton saris at Thangam Pattu Maaligai showroom in Salem. These saris are made with cotton extracted from plants grown without using chemical fertilisers or pesticides. Colours are natural dyes obtained from flowers, leaves and seeds such as turmeric, Eucliptes, alba leaves, Karungali wood, floral bract and Annatto seeds.
The Tamil Nadu Handloom Weavers' Co-operative Society, popularly known as Co-optex, established in 1935, has a long and rich tradition in handlooms and a history that dates back over 76 years, even before India’s Independence. With ecommerce gaining pace, even Co-optex, through its platform Cooptex.gov.in has been receiving good response to its range. Cotton saris are the highest selling ones among all the other varieties on offer.
About 2.54 lakh weavers are part of Co-optex that retails through more than 200 showrooms, including 60 outlets outside Tamil Nadu. Now the society aims to use technology to reach out to the rising number of customers looking for authentic Indian weaves. It is witnessing rise in orders for saris and shirts from Indian states as well as foreign countries.
The company also interacts with its target customers through its Facebook page. Co-optex recently inked an MoU with Flipkart to promote its range.
