Textile and fashion designer Gaurang Shah has changed the rules of the game. Instead of chasing style statements, Shah has woven his own fabric with a touch of elegance and simplicity.

Shah specialises in high end handcrafted saris and fashion apparels. He felt women would be ready to move beyond georgette and chiffon saris if presented with alternative fabrics, textures, and patterns. He found the six-yard fabric magical and believed it had immense potential to dominate the fashion platform.

He creates saris made in traditional jamdani weaves on hand woven fabrics and uses eco-friendly techniques like natural dyes, giving a modern twist to traditional fabrics. He works with a team of 500 weavers. One of Shah’s specialties is his skill of blending traditional art with modern designs. One example is the collection Ardhangini , which is a combination of Kanjeevaram and Kalamkari . The Chitr-Sena collection is a combination of folklore and fables. His khadi ensembles are another example of blending past with modernity.

After launch of his first flagship store in Hyderabad in 2010, Shah’s works have received a celebrity fashion following, who include Vidya Balan, Sonam Kapoor, Kirron Kher, Kajal Aggarwal, Amala Paul, Tapsee Pannu, among others. His other stores are spread across Bangalore, Chennai, Kolkata and Mumbai.
