India’s kids’ wear segment, traditionally considered a complex business, is now gradually coming out of the closet in a new avatar high on glamour and glitz. The segment has traditionally been dominated by unorganized players, but now designers have entered the space, creating miniature versions of their designs especially for kids. Even parents are keen to grab exclusive creations for their little ones.

Eye-catching designs and colours, cute motifs and custom-made designer labels have added an edge to the fashion clothing of children. Recently, designer Monisha Jaising launched a label called ‘MJ Kids’, marking a foray into the category. Jattinn Kochhar has been designing for kids after his children were born. His collection includes identical sets for the mothers and daughters and fathers and sons.

Karuna Kedia of Mimosa too has been catering to the segment over a decade now. Exposure to social media and internet, parents wanting to buy the best for their children without bothering about the rates, a rise in middle-class nuclear families and working women are have all contributed to the growth of this segment. While the efforts that go into making a small-size garment are huge, designers like Payal Singhal enjoy working on the designs. Her ‘Bacha Party’ collection adds to the kids’ fashion sense.
