First there was a gap between the festive and winter season. Then the cold set in late which worried knitwear players. However, after the first rainfall of the season this week, they are in an upbeat mood since rains during winter season is followed by chilly weather across the northern states. For the past few years, uncertain weather conditions have had a negative impact on the winterwear business, with high inventories piling up.

However, delayed winter already affected manufacturing because stakeholders had to delay manufacturing winter wear due to extreme summers even in October. Production of winterwear usually starts in April every year. Now the industry is hoping for an increase in the sale of woollens, which in turn will boost business of wholesalers and manufacturers. While earlier, players created winter merchandise for only two seasons, now two more seasons have been added that is: mid-winter and mid-summer. This has affected the hosiery business. Light products like sweatshirts are manufactured for mid-winter and mid-summer season when there is neither extreme heat nor extreme cold.

Most wholesalers would not place orders for new products lying in the godowns of manufacturers unless they get orders from retail outlets in the region. Though major part of manufactured goods have already been sent to states in, but with the onset of extreme winters demand grows from New Delhi where retailers have formed an association that directly contacts Ludhiana manufacturers demanding woollen clothing.
