During the recent New York Fashion Week at Skylight Clarkson Square, designer Bibhu Mohapatra presented his spring 2016 collection inspired by the life of Swiss journalist, photographer and traveller, Annemarie Schwarzenbach. He is a style icon of the Bauhaus era. While Schwarzenbach was known for wearing men’s clothes, Mohapatra’s ensembles were bold yet feminine.

Blending strong geometric details in both patterns in the fabric of his designs as well as the structure of the garments, he created some outstanding daywear looks. For daywear, the line included a dresses, pants, tops and skirts suitable for a variety of occasions. The evening wear range included, sky medallion beaded organza and chiffon gown with geometric panel.

It may be recalled that on her visit to India, the US First Lady Michelle Obama, donned a knee-length floral dress created by Mohapatra, paired with a matching coat and black pumps. The New York-based designer, who after working for a decade as design director for J.Mendel launched his namesake collection in 2009, enjoys a presence in North America, Europe, Russia and the Middle East. His work has been appreciated and donned by Hollywood actresses like Hilary Swank, Gwyneth Paltrow, Glenn Close and Jennifer Lopez.
