With several designers putting efforts to revive the Indian weaves backing Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s ‘Make in India’ initiative, Goa-based designer Wendell Rodricks also has joined the fray. He has recreated the famous Kunbi sari from Goa contemporary looks.

The traditional sari was once worn by the Kunbi tribal women in Goa before the invasion of the Portuguese in the 16th century. It was a cotton sari having red and white cheque. Worn just above the ankles with a knot over the shoulder, it was suitable for women working in farms.

Later Kunbi weaving was said to have shifted to the state of Maharashtra. These saris were then purchased from weavers based outside Goa for dancers performing during state festivals. Now Rodricks has reworked on the fabric to make it suitable for the modern sensibilities. While the lines, checks, and the ikat weave continues to appear on the new sari design, he has removed the jacquard border to make it lighter.

He unveiled the collection called ‘ Kunbi Tribe’ in 2010 and now it has become a part of wardrobes of many noted personalities such as Sonia Gandhi and her daughter Priyanka Vadra. Model Lisa Ray is the face of the Kunbi weaves.
